Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez had his worst season by wRC+ in 2026. His average/slugging fell from .259/.424 before a July 3 concussion to .239/.383 afterward, and his center-field defense also declined; he says he has more to give next year.
Statcast ranked Rodríguez in the top 10% or better among center fielders in Fielding Run Value in each of his first four seasons; in 2026 he fell below the 40th percentile. He still stole more than 20 bases, recording his fifth straight 20-20 season and becoming the first player in MLB history to open a career with five.
Rodríguez called the concussion a “new and different” experience in a sport that relies on reaction, balance and eyesight, but declined to detail all its effects. He said he was late more often at the plate and chased pitches, and that he needed to return to his defensive basics. He believes the Mariners have the pieces to respond.
