CNN’s Abby Phillip contrasted clips of Donald Trump attacking Barack Obama over state dinners for Chinese leaders with Trump’s lavish dinner for Xi Jinping this week. The White House said the leaders discussed several issues but announced no agreement or timetable for action.
The montage included a 2015 interview in which then-candidate Trump said he would give Xi a McDonald’s hamburger instead of a state dinner. Other clips showed Trump criticizing Obama’s hosting of Chinese officials in 2011, 2015 and 2016; in a 2012 speech, Trump called Obama “stupid” for hosting Chinese President Hu Jintao.
About 100 guests, including tech executives and media supporters, attended the White House dinner. The menu included sesame-crusted sea bass, baby bok choy and honey ice cream.
