Anna Jordan and her husband plan to ride out the weekend nor’easter aboard their 65-foot schooner off Cape Cod after moving it to a more protected spot; their two daughters will stay with grandparents. Jordan said forecasts call for high winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding.
The couple removed the schooner’s four sails, cleared loose items from the deck, checked the bilge pumps and secured the hatches. They chose to stay aboard with the boat tucked behind land; Jordan said a protected cove was another option, but people are not allowed to stay aboard there. She said they will make another decision if winds reach 60 mph; the boat can withstand winds up to 50 mph.
Jordan said the couple has solar power and a generator, and checks storm-tracking apps every few hours as forecast models change. She said her main concern is potential coastal flooding and damage to Cape Cod’s beaches and dunes.
