Under Article 6, these internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs) are tracked between governments, and a tonne credited to a buyer cannot also count for Canada. The article notes Canada is already falling short of its own target, making exports a domestic accounting trade-off.
The Canada Energy Regulator counts 78 carbon-removal companies and 48 active or planned projects; Alberta projects have stored more than 18 million tonnes of CO₂.
