Ahead of Sunday's Ravens-Cowboys game in Rio, Brazil's anthem lyrics recall the 1822 independence declaration at the Ipiranga, portray the country as a land of love and hope, and urge Brazilians to fight if Brazil raises “the strong mace of justice.”
Francisco Manuel da Silva composed the melody in 1831, and Joaquim Osorio Duque-Estrada wrote the lyrics in 1909. After the First Brazilian Republic was established in 1889, a different anthem was selected, but public backlash led the provisional government to retain da Silva's tune. Duque-Estrada's lyrics became the anthem's official text by presidential decree in 1922.
