Memphis waived D’Angelo Russell on Friday. Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells called Miami his most obvious potential landing spot. Russell reportedly wants a playoff contender; the Heat have one open roster spot and are reportedly interested in a veteran guard. No deal is reported.
Russell has averaged 17 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game over 11 seasons, and averaged 23 points per game in 2019–20. Wells said he could back up Davion Mitchell, whom he described as Miami’s only true point guard. Wells also suggested the Heat may limit Giannis Antetokounmpo’s early ballhandling workload given his injury issues last season.
Heat insider Ira Winderman said Russell would be worth a look given Miami’s roster and cap flexibility. Winderman said the contracts of Nick Richards and Myron Gardner would still leave the Heat able to add a veteran through a buyout later.
