Bears challenge Eagles’ no-tee kickoffs as NFL coordinators revisit rule

The Eagles used punter Braden Mann as a kickoff holder without a tee in their Week 2 win. Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower says the ball should be on a tee when a holder is used; Jordan Schultz reports it may not be fully enforced this week.

At Friday’s special-teams coordinators meeting, Hightower said the group wants a tee whenever a 12th player holds the ball. He said the option was discussed two years ago, later limited to weather-related use, then allowed at any time last year. Eagles coordinator Michael Clay said he believed Atlanta had used the approach with kicker Nick Folk and that it offered a different launch angle. NJ.com said the Eagles might use it once more against Chicago on Monday night.
