Elizabeth Taylor sent attorney Barbara Berkowitz a $10,000 check in 2010 for her Golden Retriever Chase’s cancer treatment, Berkowitz recalls. She still carries Taylor’s accompanying note, which wished the dog many more years.
Berkowitz said Taylor learned Chase had cancer without being asked for help, worked out the treatment cost and sent the check to her office. Berkowitz recalled crying as she called to thank Taylor, who told her to focus on keeping Chase comfortable.
Taylor’s note said life would not be the same without dogs and expressed hope that Chase would have many more years. Berkowitz also remembered Taylor’s advice and encouragement as a mentor, saying it was difficult to be a woman working in law in the 1980s and ’90s.
