AutoZone executives say inflation is prompting some DIY customers to delay maintenance or choose cheaper repairs. AAA warns missed safety checks can endanger motorists; NHTSA data say about 9% of crashes involved vehicles with tire problems just beforehand.
On AutoZone’s fourth-quarter earnings call, CFO Jamere Jackson said transactions were soft as customers faced high inflation and that deferrals and trade-downs were most evident among financially challenged DIY buyers. He said the pattern was not new to the industry and was expected to recover over time. CEO Phil Daniele said customers may postpone maintenance under financial pressure, but needed parts eventually must be replaced and continued deferral can lead to failure.
Consumer Reports’ chief mechanic John Ibbotson said getting repairs done before they cause other problems can save money, since a small issue may become much costlier when ignored. AAA says deferred maintenance can also reduce fuel economy and lead to expensive breakdowns or major engine damage; it warns exhaust leaks may let carbon monoxide into the cabin, while oil or fuel leaks could cause a vehicle fire.
