The Astros could clinch the AL West by beating the Athletics if the Rangers lose to the Twins. Houston and Texas were tied, but the Astros held the tiebreaker after taking their season series 9-4; Hayden Wesneski was set to start against Jack Perkins.
The game was the third of a four-game series at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Houston had lost the previous night 6-5. Wesneski, 5-2 with a 3.50 ERA, was slated for his 11th major-league start after returning to the rotation July 29 following 14 months recovering from Tommy John surgery.
