A win over San Diego and a Philadelphia loss would pull Arizona level in the playoff race and leave the Diamondbacks in control of their postseason fate.
Arizona recalled catcher Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno and designated outfielder Jesús Sánchez for assignment, leaving its active roster at 28 and 40-man roster at 39. Gabriel Moreno left the previous game with a hamstring issue and was limited to designated hitter duties. Sánchez had gone 2-for-15 with no extra-base hits and a 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Moreno was also pursuing Arizona’s first batting title. His average was .31064, narrowly ahead of Arraez’s .31040; the article said Moreno would secure the title with at least three hits in his next 10 at-bats if Arraez remained benched. Philadelphia’s magic number was two: a Phillies win and Diamondbacks loss would clinch for Philadelphia.
