Director Claire Scanlon says The Love Hypothesis film cuts Holden and expands Anh’s role in the ending: unlike the book, where Malcolm knows Olive and Adam are fake dating, the movie reveals Anh knew all along because she observed them as a scientist.
Scanlon said Anh’s expanded role strengthens the film’s focus on her friendship with Olive. She moved some of their backstory earlier so viewers would understand Olive kisses Adam out of loyalty to her friend and found family.
Scanlon said the film’s voiceover is open to interpretation: it begins with Olive talking to her mice, but there are no mice at the end. She also sees the voiceover as following Olive’s growing self-confidence.
