Angel Eduardo Rico, 18 at the time, received 12 years after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter over a December 2024 Nampa crash. His car landed on a house roof, killing passenger Jose Teran Chaparro, 31; Rico can seek parole after three fixed years.
Prosecutors said the vehicle’s event-data recorder showed Rico was traveling at high speed immediately before impact and cited evidence that he had been drinking and using drugs the previous night. Before the crash, he had 11 traffic-related cases dating to 2021; a racing allegation that year was reduced to speeding, to which he pleaded guilty.
Prosecutors sought 15 years, with seven fixed, while the defense asked for retained jurisdiction followed by probation. Rico’s term includes nine indeterminate years; court records also show 48 days’ credit for time served and a five-year driver’s-license suspension beginning after his release.
