An emergency appendectomy ended Taylor Townsend’s Guadalajara Open run

Taylor Townsend underwent an emergency appendectomy in Mexico during the Guadalajara Open, days after winning the US Open doubles title. The surgery prompted her withdrawal; she is now home recovering with her son.

Townsend said she initially thought her abdominal pain was food poisoning. After her physiotherapist and a doctor examined her at the hotel, the doctor told her to go to hospital; tests indicated she needed emergency surgery. She said she was alone and scared, far from home.
