AMD shares closed at a record $615.52 on Sept. 21, their first close above $600, making the chipmaker a $1 trillion company for the first time. The article found no public comment from management on another split; AMD's last of six stock splits was in 2000.

A split would increase AMD's share count and reduce its per-share price proportionally, without changing investors' ownership stakes, revenue, profits or the company's market value. At June's end, AMD had about 1.63 billion shares outstanding, essentially unchanged from the start of the year.

AMD reported second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year, and earnings per share of $1.38, compared with $0.54 a year earlier. Data-center revenue climbed 107% to $6.7 billion; management forecast third-quarter revenue of about $13 billion, up about 41% year over year.
