ADM plans carbon-credit market entry using Nebraska plant’s 800,000-plus-ton annual removal capacity

Insider Monkey

Archer-Daniels-Midland plans to enter the voluntary carbon market using more than 800,000 tons of annual removal capacity at its Columbus, Nebraska, corn-processing complex. First credits are expected by the end of 2026, subject to an audit and Puro.earth certification.

At the Columbus complex, carbon dioxide from ethanol fermentation is purified, compressed and sent to Tallgrass’s Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub for permanent underground storage; the carbon-capture operation was inaugurated with Tallgrass in 2025. Successful certification and verification would begin a 15-year crediting period, creating a framework for repeated issuance as eligible removals are verified, but not guaranteeing sales.

The stated capacity is not the same as credits issued or sold. The announcement gives no credit prices, committed purchase volumes or project margins, preventing a firm estimate of ADM’s earnings contribution. The economics also depend on costs for capture, purification, compression, transport, storage, monitoring and certification.
