Farrah and James converted a former military Leland DAF T244 into a full-time off-grid home after feeling confined by conventional living. They paid £7,750 for the truck and live in it with their two dogs; it has a kitchen, bathroom and queen-size bed.
They named the truck Roxy and built its living area on a flatbed with a box, including a raised dinette and L-shaped kitchen. It has roof-mounted 1,300-watt solar panels, a 24-volt generator, 105 gallons of fresh water and 66 gallons of gray-water storage; its two fuel tanks hold 92 and 53 gallons.
Autoevolution noted that a vehicle this large is not especially fuel-efficient, long drives can be exhausting and replacement mechanical parts can be hard to source. The article also says specialized rigs can require hefty upfront spending and mechanical know-how, while fuel, insurance, repairs, water, heating and parking fees can add up.
