Netflix’s A Different World revival echoes Theo Huxtable’s learning-disability story through Ellington Kendall, who says his uncle recognized his struggles before a dyslexia diagnosis. The season reveals Ellington is Denise Huxtable’s son; Theo was played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
Warner died at 54 in a drowning accident in 2025. In The Cosby Show’s sixth season, the Huxtables considered a learning disability after Theo struggled in college; the revelation improved his standing at school and set him on a path toward becoming a teacher.
The revival also gives Ellington a Hillman family legacy: he says he is a fourth-generation student, his great-grandfather worked on campus in the 1940s, and his grandmother organized sit-ins at segregated counters and pushed for a more Afrocentric curriculum in the 1960s. The Cosby Show referenced the demonstration in a season-eight episode featuring Clair Huxtable’s Hillman reunion.
