Two shootings in South Africa killed 27 people and injured 26 hours apart: 17 died at a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday, and 10 outside a venue near Cape Town early Sunday. By Sunday morning, police had made no arrests and had not indicated a motive.

In Johannesburg, eight gunmen fired on customers outside a bar, continued inside, torched two vehicles and fled. Police said the 17 people killed were 13 men and four women. In the Cape Town-area attack, five of the 10 victims died at the scene and five in hospital.

The attacks came days after 11 people were killed when gunmen stormed a house in Durban’s KwaMakhutha township. South Africa records about 60 murders a day, and gang-related gun violence has persisted for decades; such violence is often linked to turf wars involving drug trafficking and illegal mining.
