BuzzFeed has compiled 25 Reddit users’ accounts of being disowned by relatives, with reasons ranging from gender identity and religious differences to abuse and family disputes. The accounts span estrangement, expulsion from home and, in some cases, renewed contact.
Some contributors describe years without contact, while others report occasional communication or eventual civility. One person raised as a Jehovah’s Witness said their parents disowned their children several times, briefly reversing the decision before cutting them off again.
BuzzFeed says the stories were drawn from three Reddit threads and edited for length and clarity. It warns that the piece mentions sexual assault and drug abuse.
