Zumiez plans to close about 16 stores in fiscal 2026—10 in North America and six internationally, down from an earlier plan for 25. The retailer's second-quarter sales fell 2.5% to $209 million, with CEO Rick Brooks citing weak U.S. footwear sales and lower traffic.
For the quarter ended Aug. 1, comparable sales declined 2.1%, and Zumiez posted a $2.7 million net loss, versus $1 million a year earlier. Brooks said footwear had been the biggest headwind since the second quarter of 2025, accounting for 70% of the year-over-year U.S. sales decline through the period.
Circana reported U.S. footwear dollar sales rose 1% in the first half of 2026 even as units sold fell; dollar sales of performance footwear increased 6%. Zumiez said it is working with footwear partners to bring more distinctive products to stores.
