Zoo Atlanta’s new pandas arrive, with public debut still unannounced

USA TODAY

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrived at Zoo Atlanta from China on Sept. 27, but visitors cannot see them yet. The zoo says the pandas will undergo around a month of routine quarantine and has not announced when public viewing will begin.

Male Ping Ping and female Fu Shuang were both born in 2020. They are part of a new 10-year agreement involving Zoo Atlanta and China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; Atlanta’s previous pandas left in October 2024 after a 25-year loan ended.

The pandas traveled on a private chartered FedEx 777 flight from China, then made the roughly 10-mile trip from the airport to the zoo by truck. They will live in the former panda exhibit with upgrades; the zoo plans to announce habitat details and a visitor date.
