Giancarlo Stanton and Carlos Lagrange are under consideration for the Yankees’ Wild Card Series roster, manager Aaron Boone said, but neither is assured a spot. Stanton could be used as a pinch hitter; Lagrange’s bullpen chances may hinge on Clarke Schmidt’s status.
Stanton has been out since straining his right calf in April, then suffered a left-calf strain during a workout in August. On Tuesday, he ran the bases and took six or seven live at-bats against Double-A pitching, hitting a home run.
Lagrange, who has yet to pitch in the majors, came off the injured list last week and threw a scoreless Triple-A inning, allowing a hit, striking out two and touching 102 mph. Boone said the Yankees’ decision on Schmidt could open a path: if they pass on Schmidt, he will probably be placed on the 15-day injured list and Lagrange could be called up to compete with Michael Fulmer for the final pitching spot. Ryan Weathers is likely out until a later round, while Fernando Cruz is doubtful for the postseason.
