Godzilla Minus Zero premiered at the New York Film Festival with an R rating for “violent content/bloody images,” the first R-rated entry in the franchise. Director Takashi Yamazaki said cutting or censoring scenes he considered essential was not an option.
Under MPA rules, viewers under 17 may attend an R-rated film only with a parent or guardian. Yamazaki said the rating can signal that a film has not been censored and cited successful R-rated releases as encouragement; he hopes Godzilla Minus Zero continues that trend.
Yamazaki said he had not planned a sequel. Toho executives raised the idea after seeing the first cut of Godzilla Minus One, but he only considered it viable once the film opened in theaters and audiences worldwide began celebrating it.
