Variety’s review calls Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” a spectacular 1949-set sequel: officials try to lure Godzilla and King Ghidorah into a fight, hoping to weaken the survivor for human forces to finish off. It opens Nov. 6.
The film continues the story of former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), his wife Noriko (Minamo Hamabe) and their adopted daughter Akiko. Noriko survived Godzilla’s 1947 attack and now has bits of the creature’s DNA in her body. The review also highlights Masami Nagasawa as meteorologist Makoto Aoyama and Min Tanaka as Professor Murakami.
The review praises Yamazaki’s visuals and the scale of the monster battles, but says the final section’s plot strands become tangled. It finds Professor Murakami’s hidden agenda too abstract, particularly how he intended to carry it out.
