Protests against Xi Jinping continued almost nonstop in Washington Thursday as President Donald Trump hosted the Chinese leader for a state visit. Demonstrators called for greater freedoms in Tibet, Hong Kong and Xinjiang and for Taiwan to remain self-governed.
Opposition demonstrators gathered outside the Chinese Embassy in the morning before marching through the city. By late afternoon, a few hundred had gathered at a park near the White House; their chants grew louder during the state-dinner ceremony. About 200 Xi supporters separately gathered outside his hotel, waving Chinese and U.S. flags and chanting, “Welcome, welcome, a warm welcome.”
