Harry Francis, a World War Two veteran from South Gloucestershire, has died aged 101. He joined the Royal Navy at 16 in 1942 after lying about his age, later became one of the first Special Boat Service members and was wounded during covert operations in Burma.
After joining the Royal Marines, Francis took part in covert operations in Italy and Lebanon as well as Burma. South Gloucestershire Armed Forces Day organisers paid tribute to his “quiet bravery”; he celebrated his centenary with family and friends last year.
Royal Marines Reserve Bristol personnel visited Francis and delivered a message from First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, recognising his courage. His daughter Teresa Betton told the BBC that he had signed the Official Secrets Act and did not share all his stories.
