Bradford kidney patient Izzy Mohammed has launched BrAdKIN, a support network for people with kidney disease. After his 2013 transplant failed in 2021, he began dialysis; the group’s first event brought patients, carers and clinicians together at St Luke’s Hospital.
BrAdKIN is short for Bradford & Airedale Kidney Information Network. Mohammed said the idea followed a University of Salford workshop where kidney patients shared experiences; he said the network offers information, guidance and peer support.
Mohammed has spent four years on the national transplant waiting list, hoping for a second transplant. He said organ donation can be difficult to discuss in some ethnic minority communities; an imam he approached told him, “if you can save a life, you should be able to save a life.”
