Loretta Denise Freeman was arrested July 19 and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after allegedly letting three 4-year-old girls hit a boy at SolVerus Academy Christian Preschool in Mauldin on June 19. The boy’s aunt sued Freeman and the school Sept. 9.
The lawsuit, filed by aunt Sonya Aubrey in Greenville County court, alleges SolVerus negligently hired and supervised Freeman and that both defendants are liable for battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The filing says the boy began showing behavioral and emotional symptoms, including urinating on himself, before the employee’s discipline practices came to light; it alleges the abuse caused or contributed to them. Aubrey seeks unspecified damages for humiliation and past and future medical and psychological treatment costs.
A June 30 inspection found SolVerus compliant in 53 areas and noncompliant in one: “positive non-abusive discipline practice.” The agent reviewed discipline rules with staff, as she had twice before. Records also show citations for high-severity discipline and behavior-management issues in August and December 2024. A Post and Courier review found 23 of nearly 2,300 providers statewide had three or more such citations in three years; the paper used AI to organize records and manually checked a sample. SolVerus says it fired Freeman and voluntarily provided video to DSS the day the incident was reported. Freeman is out on bond.
