SLED is investigating Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander and another officer over allegations they moved and concealed the missing guns and bloody clothing after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed in 2021. Alexander denies involvement in removing evidence, his lawyer says.
A SLED agent told The Post and Courier that law enforcement interviewed the Lowcountry official who made the accusations and some potential suspects. The official said Alexander spoke of arriving early at the crime scene and providing Alex Murdaugh a change of clothes, and believed the officers temporarily took the guns and bloody clothing to the Yemassee police station. The newspaper said it could not corroborate the claims.
FITSNews reported, citing unnamed sources, that a state grand jury had allegedly issued subpoenas and obtained information about the accusations. The Attorney General’s Office said it could not confirm or deny whether a state grand jury investigation exists, citing secrecy rules. The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered Alex Murdaugh a new trial in May over improper comments to jurors by a Colleton County court official. Murdaugh denies killing his wife and son and is scheduled to stand trial again next April in Sumter County.
