Miami ranked last for rental affordability among 182 major U.S. cities, with median asking rent at about $3,285 a month, The Latin Times reported. A $1,500 monthly budget covers about 498 square feet; Hispanic renters face especially high cost burdens.
The Center for Economic and Policy Research, using ethnicity data from Harvard's 2022 housing survey, found that 60.4% of Hispanic renters in Florida and 56.3% in California are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on rent.
At Little Havana's Silver Court Mobile Home Park, more than 200 families received March notices to leave by Sept. 30 after the landowner announced redevelopment plans; many own their mobile homes, not the land. State Sen. Ileana García and Miami City Commissioner Ralph Rosado met residents to seek more time and larger payouts. Since 2020, about 278,000 residents have left Miami-Dade through domestic out-migration. The article says middle-class Hispanic families are among those pushed out by rising costs. Miami-Dade's Tenants' Bill of Rights stopped applying after a 2023 Florida law blocked local tenant ordinances statewide.
