The White House called a government-funded Fox News ad featuring President Donald Trump a patriotic public-service announcement, not a campaign ad. Officials compared the “Love Me” spot, which includes policy images, with past healthcare, anti-drug and wartime PSAs.
To support the comparison, the White House cited wartime posters, films and radio messages, George W. Bush-era Medicare and anti-drug ads, Barack Obama’s 2016 push for Affordable Care Act enrollment, and Joe Biden’s 2021 COVID-19 vaccine campaign. Biden’s campaign involved 275 organizations; a $250 million contract signed under Trump’s first administration helped fund its development.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin said the ad may involve criminal theft or conversion of government property and a Hatch Act violation by employees who worked on it or used government resources; these remain allegations. Constitutional law professor Jessica Levinson said earlier modern examples involved specific programs, unlike this ad, and that the White House’s response weakened its informational rationale. The DNC also accused Trump of using taxpayer funds for a campaign ad; a direct challenge to the Government Accountability Office remained uncertain.
