A federal judge ordered the White House to restore credentials for affected journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico, which President Donald Trump barred from its grounds last week. The 14-day order is temporary; a longer preliminary injunction remains undecided.
Judge Timothy Kelly focused the order on Fifth Amendment due process rather than resolving whether the outlets have a First Amendment right to White House access. He said they were likely to show they received neither proper notice of why credentials could be revoked nor a chance to respond. The administration cited national security but did not detail how the coverage threatened it; Kelly found the stated standard too vague to justify the ban.
The White House video pool provided no live footage of the president for days after CNN was barred and the other four broadcasters declined to participate; the pool resumed Friday. A separate AP lawsuit over the agency’s exclusion from some events and the pool remains ongoing. A preliminary appeals court ruling said the White House could exclude AP from highly restricted spaces such as the Oval Office or Air Force One.
