West Midlands families get free meals through FoodCycle’s surplus scheme

BBC

FoodCycle uses surplus supermarket produce to provide free vegetarian meals and take-home groceries, helping feed hundreds of families and schoolchildren through school-based sessions across the West Midlands. At Birmingham’s Ark Tindal Academy, families meet weekly.

FoodCycle says the scheme helps cut food waste. Teacher Amy Henderson said it had eased pressure on families facing rising household bills and helped parents, children, school staff and volunteers build relationships. Sophie Aoun of FoodCycle said the meals also introduce children to a wider range of fruit and vegetables. The scheme also runs at Windsor Olympic Academy in Birmingham and Goldsmiths Primary Academy in Walsall.
