The US invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the December G20 summit in Miami, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday, adding that Washington hopes he accepts. Putin last attended a G20 summit in person in 2019, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in mid-September that he would be willing to attend the summit and hold talks with Putin if invited.
Rubio met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. Russia’s Foreign Ministry posted photos but did not immediately provide details of their talks. The two last met in July; their 35-minute meeting produced no breakthrough on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
