Wakefern recalls 23-ounce jars of Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after FDA monitoring found patulin above acceptable limits. They bear UPC 04119005677 and a June 16, 2027 best-by date; no linked illnesses or injuries have been reported.
The affected jars were distributed through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market. Wakefern says no other products at those supermarkets are included. It advises customers not to consume the applesauce and says they can return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund or replacement.
Patulin is a toxin produced by some molds that can grow on damaged or bruised apples. The FDA says consuming contaminated apple products can cause nausea and vomiting, and that patulin may damage DNA in some cells.
