Volkswagen is dropping planned extra shifts in Wolfsburg and expects annual output near 580,000 vehicles, below an earlier plan of 600,000 or more, as new orders for its electric models reportedly outnumber those for gasoline and diesel cars in Germany.
Volkswagen’s EV plants in Emden and Zwickau are preparing for higher capacity with at least two added shifts, while ID. Polo production is increasing at Martorell, Spain. The Polo has drawn more than 40,000 European orders since its late-April launch; Automobilwoche reported every version had been claimed, with a waitlist of at least 10 months.
The ID. Polo’s Trend trim starts at €24,995 (roughly $29,000) and has a WLTP-rated range of about 207 miles (334 km). Neither it nor the ID.3 Neo is expected to launch in the United States for now, though a standout sales performance or demand shift could change that.
