Vanguard Renewables plans to acquire Generate Upcycle’s North American operations; the companies expect to close Oct. 1, 2026. The deal would nearly double Vanguard’s food-waste-to-gas capacity and bring its network to 19 facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
Generate Upcycle’s facilities in upstate New York and Ontario include anaerobic-digestion and advanced-depackaging sites. The combined platform is projected to process about 565,000 tons of food waste each year and add roughly 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas to Vanguard’s operations. Anaerobic digestion uses microorganisms to break down organic material without oxygen, producing biogas that can be upgraded to natural gas.
The Ontario assets would place Vanguard in Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations market. Food decomposing in landfills can emit methane, while anaerobic digestion is designed to capture energy from the same material.
