The VA says it processed over 3 million disability claims in fiscal 2026, cutting average decision times from 141.5 days in January 2025 to 75.6 days in September 2026 and reducing its backlog by more than 70%. Advocates say rating accuracy remains a concern.
The VA also said it awarded more than $207 billion in compensation and pension benefits to veterans and survivors in fiscal 2026. It reported claims accuracy of about 94%, the highest level in two years. Officials said the department enrolled more than 270,000 new veterans in VA health care during 2026 and opened 41 facilities since January 2025.
Veterans of Foreign Wars executive Ryan Gallucci said the gains reflect years of modernization, including automation and a more objective rating schedule. Financial literacy instructor Alex Beene cautioned that quick decisions can still undervalue a disability and community-care referrals may involve months of appointment and billing coordination; he also cited staffing shortages.
