SK hynix’s U.S. subsidiary Solidigm is weighing a NAND factory, Reuters reported Sept. 18, 2026, with upstate New York a leading candidate. No agreement has been reached; the project would be separate from talks over memory production at Intel’s Ohio facility.
Solidigm’s only NAND production facility is in Dalian, China. A U.S. plant could diversify its footprint and reduce exposure to U.S. tariffs and restrictions on exports of chipmaking equipment to China; Washington has threatened tariffs of up to 100% without more U.S. manufacturing.
SK hynix has not disclosed the project’s cost, capacity or construction schedule. U.S. labor, construction and supply-chain costs are higher than in South Korea or China, and building a plant would take years. Industry executives expect memory constraints through at least 2027, though Reuters cited concerns that slower frontier-AI development could weaken long-term demand.
