Fighting in Yemen displaced 71,000 children among nearly 130,000 people in three weeks, UNICEF says, disrupting healthcare access. More than a quarter of nearly 2,900 children screened recently were acutely malnourished, including 200 with severe acute malnutrition.
UNICEF said its screening covered accessible areas and was only a snapshot of the wider crisis. It projects 2.2 million children under five will be acutely malnourished in Yemen this year, including more than half a million with severe acute malnutrition.
Most of the displaced people were uprooted from or within Taiz, in southwestern Yemen. UNICEF said it had verified that at least 15 children were killed and 14 injured in the conflict since early September; three were still reported missing. Separately, 243 schools closed or suspended classes over the past three weeks, affecting nearly 140,000 students. UNICEF’s country representative urged parties to protect children, civilians and civilian infrastructure, uphold international humanitarian law, and facilitate safe, unimpeded humanitarian access.
