U.S. gas averaged $4.30 a gallon for September through Thursday, putting the month on pace to exceed the 2023 September record by nearly 50 cents if the average holds, AAA said. Thursday’s average was $4.48; AAA cited high crude prices and Strait of Hormuz volatility.
AAA said August was the first month U.S. gas prices stayed above $4 for the entire month. Prices typically fall in early autumn, the group said. California had the nation’s highest state average at $6.23 a gallon; Texas was lowest at $3.95.
Diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon Tuesday and stood at $6.51 Thursday, nearly $3 above a year earlier, AAA said. GasBuddy said higher diesel prices can raise transportation and business costs and push up prices for goods and services. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he may ban diesel exports to lower costs at home.
