Braves pitcher Tyler Mahle finished the regular season at 149 innings, one short of the 150 needed for a $1 million bonus, after allowing five earned runs in five innings against the Reds. Manager Walt Weiss said sending him back out solely for the bonus would be irresponsible.
Mahle signed a one-year, $10 million contract with San Francisco before the season, and the contract remained in place when Atlanta acquired him at the trade deadline. Before Thursday’s outing, he had a 1.99 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across eight Braves starts, allowing two runs or fewer in each.
Against Cincinnati, Mahle allowed six hits, two walks and two home runs, struck out four and left after 91 pitches; the Reds won 7-6. Atlanta had clinched the NL East and a first-round bye, and Mahle is expected to remain in the team’s postseason pitching plans.
