Lawyers say some couples in England and Wales are delaying divorce because maintaining two homes has become too costly. ONS reports people are staying in relationships longer before divorcing; annual divorces are below the 150,000-a-year peak reached in the 1980s–2000s.
Rebecca Aston-Jones, a senior associate at Clarke Willmott, told the Guardian that housing, energy, transport, grocery and child-care costs can make separation harder. She said some people may stay together even when their living situation is no longer healthy or sustainable.
