Texas lost 10-2 to Minnesota after Jacob deGrom gave up eight runs in four innings, wiping out an early 2-0 lead. Josh Jung left after a pitch struck his wrist; the Rangers were not eliminated but needed Houston to lose games to keep their AL West hopes alive.
Texas entered tied with Houston but was effectively behind on the tiebreaker, with three games remaining. The Rangers reasonably needed to sweep Minnesota; after this loss, they would essentially need the Astros to lose at least two of their final three against the Athletics.
The teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday at Target Field, with first pitch set for 3:10 p.m. CDT. Minnesota planned to start right-hander Bailey Ober; Texas had not announced a starter.
