President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday with a band, ceremonial cannon fire and B-1 bombers overhead; Trump appeared to duck and grimace at the noise, while Xi appeared stone-faced.
Trump is due to host Xi for a state dinner Thursday, the second of his second term. Administration officials told Politico that Trump is trying to woo Xi and present himself as his “equal”; talks are set to cover artificial intelligence, the Iran war, tariffs and rare earths.
Trump biographer Michael Wolff told the Inside Trump's Head podcast that Trump seeks “good news” by agreeing rather than negotiating a good deal. The report says concerns are mounting that Trump may not secure terms favorable to the United States.
