At least six U.S. hospitals have reached Justice Department deals over gender-affirming care for minors, with reported payments totaling at least $24.3 million this year. The deals are not admissions of wrongdoing, and some payment amounts were not disclosed.
The hospitals named are Texas Children's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Connecticut Children's Hospital, Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Langone Health and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Each deal included commitments to pay damages and federal penalties; most also included money for detransition services for patients dissatisfied with the care they received. Mount Sinai and NYU Langone said they accepted deals hoping to end federal investigations into their systems.
The Justice Department alleged providers may have violated federal law through fraudulent billing, but its announcements of these six deals presented no evidence of fraud. The Trump administration also threatened to strip hospitals providing gender-affirming care to minors of Medicare and Medicaid funding. Lambda Legal questioned the deals, saying they put political retribution ahead of hospitals’ obligations to trans youth; it noted a July injunction already blocked NYU Langone and Mount Sinai from releasing patient information.
