Donald Trump showed Xi Jinping the White House’s presidential portrait wall Thursday and pointed to Joe Biden’s portrait, saying, “This is the autopen,” a reference to Biden’s use of an automated signing tool. Xi and his aides laughed.
Xi was on the second day of a state visit that began Wednesday. Trump also showed him the presidential “Walk of Fame,” where Trump’s image appears twice because he won non-consecutive elections; the official White House account posted video of the Biden remark on X.
The visit opened with a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, including a military flyover and artillery salute. Republican Sen. Roger Wicker criticized the welcome, saying he would not have scheduled such a display and citing concerns including China’s military buildup and support for Iran.
