Organizers say over 200 organizations have endorsed a free social justice convention set for Saturday in Newark. Sponsored by the People's Organization for Progress, it will focus on coalition-building and voter mobilization ahead of the midterms.
The event is open to the public and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Essex County College's Smith Hall. Participants will propose and vote on resolutions in two plenary sessions. Organizers say resolutions passed will be nonbinding, with each endorsing organization deciding whether to adopt them. No separate workshops are planned.
Organizers say the convention will consider domestic and international issues and aims to develop a “people’s agenda for social justice and resistance,” while building a coalition opposed to policies advanced by the Trump administration, Congress and the Supreme Court. Voter registration and education are priorities; POP chairman Lawrence Hamm said organizing should continue after November.
