Donald Trump was mocked online after welcoming China’s Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday: a resurfaced 2012 tweet shows Trump condemning Barack Obama for hosting Xi, then China’s vice-president, with a full-honors ceremony.
YouTuber Adam Mockler replied to Trump’s old post with an image of the president greeting Xi and the words “This you?” Other users posted a GIF of Trump saying, “Well, that’s a big statement,” and invoked the saying, “There’s always a tweet.”
Obama hosted Xi amid US-China trade tensions and a crackdown on protests in Tibet. Obama said Washington wanted to work with China to ensure everyone followed the same rules in the global economic system, and that the US would continue to emphasize human rights.
